Hosts A Successful Celebration for the Arts in Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore, Maryland — March 1, 2013 – Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Charm City Pearls Interest Group hosted their inaugural celebration for the Arts at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center (Historic Baltimore Hippodrome Theatre), in Baltimore, Maryland on February 23, 2013. Over 300 patrons attended the sold-out black tie affair, which honored accomplished Baltimore and Alpha Kappa Alpha Artists.

The event began with a grand VIP awards reception that featured Jazz sensation, Mr. Art Sherrod; followed with a festive awards segment, which highlighted Morgan State University Modern Dance Ensemble; Charm City Pearls presented a donation to the Baltimore Arena Players applauding them for their work in the Arts; and the evening concluded with a fantastic musical performance by Emmy Award Winner, Mr. Darin Atwater and his Soulful Symphony.

Baltimoreans supported the event in great numbers. Baltimore City elected officials; Councilman Carl Stokes and Senator Nathaniel J. McFadden joined the celebration. Community leaders; Mrs. Diane Bell-McKoy, President and CEO of Associated Black Charities, Presidents of the Divine Nine (9) Baltimore Greek Alumnae Chapters, and other community partner organizations were in attendance. Celebrity guests showed gracefully at the event, to include, Award Winning R&B Artist – Sisqo (of Dru Hill); and Alpha Kappa Alpha leaders; Mrs. Constance R. Pizarro, North Atlantic Regional Director, current and former Board Members from the organization, the 18th International President – Mrs. Mattelia B. Grays, the 25th International President – Ms. Norma Solomon White, and area chapter Presidents attended the affair.

• The Jan Spivey Gilchrist Visual Arts Award

      2013 Award Recipient – Mr. Larry “Poncho” Brown

• The Jada Pinkett Smith Applied Arts Award

      2013 Award Recipient – Mr. Carl Brisco-Trogdon

• The Phylicia Rashad Performance Arts Award

      2013 Award Recipient – Award Winning R&B Artist – Sisqo (of Dru Hill)

All funds raised from this event will be used to deliver programs of service to the East Baltimore City community.
