Soror C. Edith Booke

29th North Atlantic Regional Director 1998-2002

Soror C. Edith Booker, a native of Richmond, Virginia, moved to the Washington Metropolitan area in 1964 to attend Howard University.  She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in microbiology and botany, respectively, from Howard and began her professional career as a Research Plant Physiologist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.), Forest Service Division.  She received her Ph.D. in botany from the University of Maryland College Park.

Soror Booker retired in March of 2004, after having a very diverse career, but continues to seek opportunities to utilize her talents and experiences.  More recently, she served as Assistant Legislative Director for the Maryland Department of Budget and Management (January – July, 2008) and as Senior Education Advisor to the Mayor of the District of Columbia from June – December, 2006.  At Morgan State University, she was the Assistant to the Dean of the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences, and Special Assistant to the President from 1991 to 2004.  Since 2004, she has also served as a peer reviewer of grant applications for the U.S. Department of Education.

Soror Booker’s professional affiliations have included the National Association of Parliamentarians, and member of the National Executive Board of THE NETWORK of the American Council on Education’s Office of Women in Higher Education.

Soror Booker is a life member and silver star of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, having been initiated in Alpha Chapter in 1966.  She has served as National Chairman of the Graduate/Undergraduate Concerns Committee, North Atlantic Regional Director, Chairman of the North Atlantic Region Program Committee and basileus of Xi Omega and Alpha Chapters.

Soror Booker’s community involvement includes member of the Board of Directors of the Reginald F. Lewis Maryland African American Museum of History and Culture, and former member of the Human Relations Commission of Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Soror Booker’s awards and honors include:  National Sojourner Truth Meritorious Service Award, of The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc., 1988; Basileus of the Year, Large Chapter, North Atlantic Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., 1992 & 1993; a Governor’s Citation for outstanding community service, the State of Maryland, 1998; one of the 1999 Maryland’s Top 100 Women – the Daily Record newspaper; the 2002 Supreme In Service Award from the North Atlantic Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc; and being featured in the book, “Queens:  Portrait of Black Women and Their Fabulous Hair,” 2005.

 

Soror Booker lives in Lanham, Maryland and enjoys playing tennis, reading, and playing the piano in her moments of leisure.
